Artist: Britt Wilson & Rian Sygh
It’s finally the big day! The Card Wars tournament is underway and Cake is prepared to take home the trophy. In Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake – Card Wars #4, Jen Wang writes a fast paced issue with plenty of drama and thrills for any passionate Card Wars fan.
So far, Wang has effectively built up the series to the big event, even if the pacing was a bit slow at times. There has been plenty of backstory present to give readers an understanding of why this tournament is so important to Cake, and it makes the stakes feel much higher than they actually should be. On top of the tournament, there is a lot going on for Fionna as well, as she tries to cope with the rift growing between her and Cake. She’s also dealing with some interesting developments with Prince Gumball, but it’s hard to tell if this will have a major impact later. Despite Fionna’s effort,s she is struggling to remain close to Cake while also supporting her love of the game that is absolutely consuming her. There are a lot of messages and positive themes for children to take in as they read through this, especially in regards to friendship.
Visually, this is one of the most impressive issues of the series so far. There are plenty of epic drawings of the action going on with the card game. Britt Wilson’s pencils are faithful to the cartoon while still maintaining a bit of a unique touch. Any fan of the cartoon series should find no issue with the art. Rian Sygh colors are especially noteworthy due to how charming and full of life it makes everything. There are engaging panels throughout the issue with some interesting layouts that do well at making the card games as exciting as they were in the episode they appeared in.
